Coffman Hardware

We’re known throughout Michigan and the country for pocket knives. The moment you walk through the door, you’ll see our “wall of knives” featuring W.R. Case pocket knives, Leatherman, Benchmade, Buck, Kershaw and more. We are the first Michigan Case knife dealer to achieve the Master Dealer status.

The Coffman Hardware building was built in the 1880’s and completely renovated in 2000.  Upstairs you will find paint, plumbing, electrical, tools, fasteners and general hardware for the homeowner, boater, and camper.  Our main level offers camping/RV equipment, hunting and fishing gear, bicycle parts, cookware, and the largest selection of knives in Northern Michigan.  We are the largest W.R. Case knife dealer in the state of Michigan.

We’ve recently redesigned our website to offer you a better browsing experience. We hope our new site reflects the same shopping experience as walking in the front door and gazing at our “Wall of knives”.

Fort Gift Shop & Candy Kitchen/Minning Company

The Fort Gift Shop and Candy Kitchen has been in the same family since 1961.  George and Katherine Stemkoski started their business on this corner as a Hot Dog stand at the same time Fort Michillmackinac opened accross the street.  The business looked promising, so they soon built a building that included a full service restaurant and a nice size gift shop.  Also, the upstairs featured a large 3 bedroom home with a view of the Mackinac Bridge.  After working the business for 10 years, the view of the bridge from the upstairs was soon to be seen by many tourist.

Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association

Originally consisting of an informal gathering of retired lighthouse keepers, their families and friends, the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association (GLLKA) was officially incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 1983, making it one of the nation’s longest-lived lighthouse preservation groups.

With a mission statement calling for “the preservation of lighthouses, the stories of those who kept them, and developing a new generation of preservationists”, the Association’s second President Dick Moehl realized the group needed to find a lighthouse to restore in order to fully bring its mission to reality.

Finding the abandoned 1873 St. Helena Island light station to be in deplorable condition, the group set its sights on adopting and restoring the abandoned relic. The United States Coast Guard had removed the lantern and most of the dwelling roof was missing. Vandals had broken into the structure and had torn out the windows, doors, stairs, interior trim and anything else which could be removed.

Over the ensuing years, the entire lighthouse complex has been lovingly restored, including the installation of a new wood shingle roof, rebuilding of the boat house and assistant keepers dwelling, installation of new lantern and chimney, and the replacement of thousands of bricks in the tower. Perhaps most amazingly, as a result of shallow waters which surround the island, all of the volunteers and materials have to be transferred to the island in small inflatable boat. Over the years, 21 Boy Scouts have successfully undertaken Eagle Scout Service Projects and Girl Scouts have earned 3 Gold and 5 Silver awards for their work on the island.

Joann’s Fudge

Joan and Frank Nephew opened the first Joann’s Fudge Store on Mackinac Island in 1969 in a building located next to the old McNally Cottage. One year later, a second Joann’s Fudge Store was opened in a historic building in the center of Mackinac Island’s downtown and in 1980 a third location was added in Mackinaw City.

Today, Joann’s Fudge is a third generation family business that continues Joan and Frank’s commitment to providing high quality products. We pride ourselves on the smooth and creamy texture of our fudge. To obtain our world famous taste, our fudge is slowly cooked in traditional copper kettles over a gas flame. Once the desired temperature is reached, the mixture is poured onto marble slabs for a cooling period and then hand paddled into loaves. We only use fresh heavy cream and butter in every batch of fudge and pure ground cocoa beans in all our chocolate flavors. Joann’s Fudge does not contain any preservatives or powdered ingredients.
